How to open a Russian spacecraft
Recently Geek in Sydney has actually been Geek in Moscow and we visited the fabulous Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics where they had a Soyuz descent craft.
The best bit is that because the craft were designed to land on the steppes instead of in the ocean, they come complete with instructions in case a lonely goat-herder should be first on scene. The bottom of the craft is intensely radioactive – it uses a Geiger counter and a radioactive source to fire the landing engines – which makes it concerning that the sign for where not to stand was not clearer. But then if they made it clear where not to stand they might never have anyone picking the key of the bottom.
It’s also worth sharing this picture – which is completely Wallace and Gromit’s wrong trousers.
