The Australian in the Google Science Fair final
Cynthia Lam is a finalist in the Google Science Fair 2014. The problem she posed herself was: Is it possible to create a portable device that purifies wastewater while generating electricity sustainably and affordably? The result is a fantastic report on the Portable Photocataytic Electricity Generation and Water Purification Unit and further validation that we have some amazing young minds in Australia. Her design simultaneously tackles two of the problems faced by the developing world: Clean water and power.
Other Science Fair finalists from around the Globe have tackled a diverse range of issues including cyber bullying, spotting gravitationally lensed pulsars and a better way to wake up in the morning. What a talented group of youngsters.
The Google Science Fair is an annual competition which offers a substantial range of prizes to individuals and teams aged from 13 to 18. Formal judging is still a little way off, but the ‘Voter’s Choice Award’ voting begins on September 1 and it’d be nice to see some local support for Cynthia’s efforts.
