Code Club expanding to high school students

Code Club and the Raspberry Pi Foundation have announced that they will be expanding to cover 9-13-year olds.

Until now Code Club has only focused on 9- to 11-year-olds – in Australian terms the upper end of primary school. Their aim is now to cover years 7-8 in high school. That’s a significant and welcome change.

At the moment all those keen primary school kids enter a dead zone for the first few years of high school until they can start getting access to coding electives in year 9. Of course without any activity in years 7 and 8, many are losing their enthusiasm by the time year 9 rolls around. That is changing, but way too slowly. So having Code Club with its infrastructure and curriculum move in could make all the difference.

As part of the change, we will be expanding our curriculum and free educational resources to cater for older children and more experienced coders. Like all our educational resources, the new materials will be created by qualified and experienced educators. They will be designed to help young people build a wide range of skills and competencies, including teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity.

Right now they are launching a pilot program in the UK to iron out the wrinkles, but it can’t be long until it’s available here too.
