Support the Aussie teams at the International Science and Engineering Fair

You only have to watch American movies to know how big science fairs are in the USA, and the pinnacle of them all is the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) the world’s largest international pre-college science competition.

Each year, around 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for more than $4 million in prizes across 22 different categories.

This year ISEF, which runs over five days, has booked out the Los Angeles Convention Centre. There are thousands of students in grades 9-12 attending from all around the World, after competing in local competitions. The grand prize this year is US$75,000. So this is no minor thing.

And there are 12 students from Australia at ISEF sponsored either by the NSW Science Teachers Association or by CSIRO and BHP Biliton They are:

  • Macinley Butson – The Ilawarra Grammar School, NSW
  • Lachlan Dick – Hellyer College, TAS
  • Rebekah Kang – PLC Sydney, NSW
  • Maddison King – Meriden School, NSW
  • Amber Kraczkowska – Pembroke School, SA
  • Eleanor Lawton-Wade – PLC Sydney, NSW
  • Justin Mitchell – St Kevin’s College, VIC
  • Jade Moxey – Sapphire Coast Anglican College, NSW

  • Declan Predavec – Mosman High School, NSW
  • Callum Predavec – Mosman High School, NSW
  • Amy Zhou – Queensland Academy of Health Science, QLD

This is the sort of STEM achievement which it is heartening to see.

The STANS NSW team is fully plugged in to all the social media channels and you can follow their exploits using the links on their blog – and, really, you should show them some support by following them on your preferred social channel. Go on, it’ll only take a moment.
