Scratch adventure game competition for students

CSC Codes has issued a challenge for students aged 10-13 in which “participants are asked to wow us with an adventure game” using Scratch.

This a major international competition with hubs all around the World including in Sydney. Working in teams of three students make an adventure game with at least a defined set of complexity. The rules vary slightly depending on how old the entrants are:

Category 1: 10 & 11 Years Old

  • Have the player make at least a total of 10 button presses and/or mouse clicks
  • Be interactive
  • Have a defined goal: e.g. defeat a monster, save the princess, rescue people from an alien attack
  • Have sound elements
  • Take no longer than 15 minutes to complete
  • Use at least 3 different elements of the Scratch tool: e.g. Loops, Blocks, Arrays, Lists…
  • Be durable: e.g. it shouldn’t break if a user clicks in the wrong place
  • Be translatable to English if your progresses to our Global Challenge Championship
  • Have clear instructions on how to play
  • Demonstrate CLEAR values (minimum 1)

Category 2:  12 & 13 Years Old

  • Have the player make at least a total of 20 button presses and/or mouse clicks
  • Be interactive
  • Have a defined goal: e.g. defeat a monster, save the princess, rescue people from an alien attack
  • Have sound elements
  • Take no longer than 20 minutes to complete
  • Use at least 6 different elements of the Scratch tool: e.g. Loops, Blocks, Arrays, Lists…
  • Be durable: e.g. it shouldn’t break if a user clicks in the wrong place
  • Be translatable to English if your progresses to our Global Challenge Championship
  • Have clear instructions on how to play
  • Demonstrate CLEAR values (minimum 3)

None of that sounds too arduous, does it? Teams must register by 17 February and have about six weeks to complete their project. There are, of course, prizes and glory on offer.
