Google Science Fair and the Australian finalist

google sci fair finalistsEach year the Google Science Fair gives visibility to the amazing things being done by young people around the World. This year is no exception – just take a look at some of the regional finalists announced yesterday:

  • A Study Into Making and Using Carbon-Coated Sea Shells for the Filtration of Lead-Contaminated Water
  • MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR MANAGING SPACE DEBRIS – Interweaving Chaos Theory and Orbital Mechanics
  • A New Eco-Friendly Method for Increasing Blast and Impact Resistance of Reinforced Concrete Buildings

These aren’t projects coming out of university research departments, they are being done by 13-18 year old kids from all around the World. And I just picked three at random, there are many, many more just like these. The depth of thinking on display is just breathtaking.

Australia’s regional finalist is 15-year-old Dapu Wang with his ingenious Wire-Free Electronic Prototyping Board: “A wire free electronic prototyping board that reduces the time and complexity associated with using traditional prototyping boards. It allows routing from any point to any other point from the perpendicular, selectively solderable orthogonal busses.”

The full list of finalist projects is absolutely worth casting your eyes over: Just prepare yourself to be filled with awe.
