RoboCup soccer – Australia loses crown

Australia’s reigning robot soccer world champions did not manage to retain the coveted crown in robotics and artificial intelligence at the RoboCup World Championships in Leipzig.

The soccer championships were taken out by the UNSW team’s arch-rival – Germany’s B-Human team. UNSW teams have taken a record five trophies over the years in the premier category, the Standard Platform League. B-Human, who are always in the top three teams, have won RoboCup German Open seven times, and the European Open once.

The winners list across various categories was dominated this year by German teams, teams from various Asian countries, and from Iran.

Australia did have one winner with the Simulation 2D category going to Gliders2016 from the University of Sydney.

The 21th RoboCup will be held in Nagoya, Japan, from 25 to 31 July 2017.
