I love the fact that serious science is being undertaken in a beautiful spot like Chowder Bay that used to be a restricted-access military installation. And what better way to fundraise for it than a walk around the best harbour in the World?

The Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) walk is on again on 1 September. The walk starts under the Harbour Bridge at ends at the Institute in Chowder Bay.

SIMS is doing some wonderful work on not just the Harbour but our more general marine environment. A lot of their current research is on pollution and the effects of marine warming. Although I’m not sure “Encouraging native water rats” is a crowd-pleaser, I’m hoping they are more cute than their name might imply. Anyway, SIMS is a worthy cause to go for a walk for.

A marine-themed festival at the finish line at Clifton Gardens Reserve will await hikers completing the walk. The Festival is free and open to all members of the public from 11am-4pm – so if you’re feeling lazy you can be there to greet the rest of us arriving. There’s even a free ferry service available to transport walkers back to Jeffrey Street Wharf, Kirribilli.
