Twitter hits new low at Ocean bottom

James Cameron has just become the person who has been deeper than any other human in history as he hit the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Cameron’s Australian-built diving pod hit the lowest point in the Ocean about an hour ago. At almost 11km deep, there is literally nowhere lower to go.

There have been more people on the Moon than have ever been anywhere near this deep. The design and logistics involved in sustaining life in the crushing pressures of the deep ocean rival our most complex undertakings. It really is an extraordinarily achievement.

And in a sign of the times, Cameron announced his arrival on the bottom with a tweet: “Hitting bottom never felt so good.” Now you’d think a director of his calibre could have found a scriptwriter to give him some more momentous words.
