Australian scientist elected to US Academy of Science

Professor Michelle Simmons, from the University of New South Wales, has been elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Professor Simmons is a physicist who leads the Centre for Quantum Computation and Communications Technology and:

has established a large research group dedicated to the fabrication of atomic-scale devices in silicon and germanium using the atomic precision of a scanning tunneling microscope. Her group is the only group world-wide that can make atomically precise devices in silicon: they have developed the world’s thinnest conducting doped wires in silicon, and the ability to manipulate and electronically measure devices with atomically precise dopant placement.

It’s fabulous to see Australian scientists being recognised internationally, especially in a cutting-edge field like quantum computing.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, frequently known as the American Academy, is one of the oldest and most prestigious honorary societies and a leading centre for independent policy research in the United States. Election to the Academy is considered one of the nation’s highest honours since its founding during the American Revolution by luminaries including John Adams and John Hancock.
